🍳 Why Women Over 40 Should Stop Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast isn't automatically bad—but for many women over 40, it may be making it harder to fuel their bodies well.

If your morning routine consists of coffee and nothing else until lunchtime, you're definitely not alone.

Maybe you're not hungry first thing in the morning. Maybe you're trying to save calories. Or maybe mornings are simply busy, and breakfast gets pushed to the bottom of your list.

But if skipping breakfast leaves you ravenous later, craving something sweet, low on energy, or struggling to get enough protein, it may be time to rethink your morning routine.

Why Breakfast Can Matter More Than You Think

As women get older, maintaining and building lean muscle becomes increasingly important.

That's one reason I encourage my clients to pay attention to protein intake throughout the entire day, rather than trying to squeeze all of their protein into dinner.

Breakfast can be an easy opportunity to get a meaningful amount of protein, along with fiber, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.

A balanced breakfast can also help you start the day feeling fueled and satisfied, rather than trying to make up for missed nutrition later.

Skipping breakfast may leave you:

  • Extremely hungry by lunchtime

  • More likely to reach for convenient foods

  • Craving sweets later in the day

  • Struggling to reach your daily protein goal

  • Feeling low on energy

  • Eating very little early in the day and playing catch-up later

And there's something else I want women over 40 to consider:

Eating less isn't always the answer.

If you're consistently under-eating because you're trying to lose body fat, you may actually be making it harder to support your workouts, recovery, energy, and lean muscle.

What Should You Eat for Breakfast?

You don't need a complicated recipe or a “perfect” breakfast.

Instead, think about building your meal around four key components:

🥚 Protein

Protein helps support muscle maintenance and repair and can help keep you satisfied.

Try:

  • Eggs

  • Greek yogurt

  • Cottage cheese

  • Protein powder

  • Lean turkey or chicken

🌱 Fiber

Fiber is important for digestive health and can contribute to feeling satisfied after a meal.

Try:

  • Berries

  • Apples or other fruit

  • Vegetables

  • Chia seeds

  • Oats

  • Whole-grain bread

🍠 Quality Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates aren't something you need to fear—especially if you're active.

They can provide energy for your workouts and daily activities.

Try:

  • Oatmeal

  • Whole-grain toast

  • Fruit

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Whole-grain or protein pancakes

🥑 Healthy Fats

Healthy fats can add flavor and nutritional value to your meal.

Try:

  • Avocado

  • Nuts

  • Seeds

  • Natural peanut or almond butter

🥞 Yes, You Can Eat Pancakes!

This is one of my favorite messages to share with my clients:

Eating for your goals doesn't mean giving up the foods you love.

Pancakes can absolutely be part of a balanced breakfast.

Instead of thinking, “Pancakes aren't healthy, so I can't eat them,” think about how you can build a more balanced meal.

For example:

Protein pancakes + Greek yogurt + berries

Now you have a breakfast that includes protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and other nutrients—while still enjoying pancakes. 🥞

That's what sustainable nutrition looks like.

Do You Have to Eat Breakfast?

No.

I don't believe every woman needs to force herself to eat breakfast at 7 a.m. simply because someone told her breakfast is “the most important meal of the day.”

If you genuinely aren't hungry in the morning, prefer a later first meal, and can still meet your nutritional needs throughout the day, that can absolutely work.

The concern is when skipping breakfast consistently leads to under-fueling, inadequate protein, low energy, or intense hunger and cravings later.

Your eating pattern should work for you.

A Better Question to Ask

Instead of asking:

“How little can I eat today?”

Try asking:

“How can I fuel my body to feel strong, energized, and satisfied?”

That shift can change the way you approach nutrition.

You don't need to eat perfectly.

You don't need to eliminate carbs.

You don't need to skip meals to lose body fat.

And you definitely don't need to give up pancakes. 😉

You need a sustainable approach that gives your body the nutrients it needs while supporting your goals.

❤️ The Bottom Line

For women over 40, breakfast can be a simple opportunity to fuel your body, prioritize protein, support lean muscle, and start the day feeling satisfied.

If skipping breakfast works well for you, there's no need to force it.

But if you're skipping breakfast because you believe eating less is always better, it may be time to reconsider.

Your goal isn't simply to eat less. It's to learn how to fuel your body better. 💌 Want More Tips Like This?
